We often hear about the importance of keeping the humidity high for a baby sulcata tortoise in order to reduce pyramiding. Soak babies daily. Make sure they have a water bowl with fresh water. But, adults need water too…
Provide big sulcata tortoises with a water bowl to drink from. But also continue to soak large sulcatas. You don’t have to soak them as often, but once or twice a week will be sufficient.
Kiddie Pool for Sulcata Tortoise
Finding a water bowl for big sulcata tortoise can be as simple as buying a kiddie pool. A large kiddie pool will be perfect for drinking and soaking.
You can cut an entrance into the pool, leaving a 1-2 inch border where the tortoise will walk into the pool. The border will keep the water in the pool. Otherwise, you can cut the pool entry to the bottom, making it flush with the ground. If you opt to cut the wall all the way off, you’ll want to sit the pool on an incline, like a hill in your yard, so that the water angles toward the side with the wall (see above picture for example).
The tortoise can drink casually as he needs a sip, and you can use the same pool for weekly soaks.
For soaks, you may have to block the tortoise into the pool, since you’ve cut an entry.
OMEM Reptile Water Dish
The OMEM reptile food bowl/water dish comes in three sizes. The largest size measures about 9.4 inches in diameter. Depending on the size of your sulcata, this bowl may be find to drink from, but it may not be sufficient to soak in.
The dish is easy to clean, durable and stable.
Large OMEM Reptile Water Bowl
The large water bowl measures about 14 x 10.25 x 2 inches. It is made of polyethylene plastic. The bowl is easy to clean.
Depending on the size of your sulcata tortoise, it may be perfect to soak in, as well as drink from. Larger adult sulcatas may only be able to drink from the bowl.
