When you’re ready to put your baby sulcata outside, set up a simple outdoor enclosure. The outdoor enclosure for a baby sulcata tortoise doesn’t have to be elaborate and highly decorated. It just needs to be big enough for basking, grazing and relaxing.
When setting up an enclosure outside for a baby sulcata, make the enclosure as large as you can.
At minimum, the outdoor enclosure should be about 4-feet by 8-feet.
Keep in mind, the larger the enclosure, the easier it is to create a safe and healthy environment. And, the larger the enclosure, the longer it will last before your baby sulcata tortoise outgrows it.
Setting Up An Outdoor Enclosure for a Small Sulcata Tortoise
Even if you don’t plan on leaving your baby sulcata outside full time, you want to make sure that while he is outside, he is safe.
Considerations for setting up an outdoor space for a baby sulcata, include:
- Plenty of room to roam around safely.
- Plenty of space to graze on grasses and weeds.
- Areas where the tortoise can bask, as well as sit in the shade.
- Place for a water bowl.
- Sight barriers, like plants, logs, stones etc.
- At least one, if not two houses in different ends of the enclosure.
- Safety from dogs and other predators.
If you notice that the enclosure is getting too hot, try to move it to an area of the yard that gets more morning sun and afternoon shade. If you have built an enclosure that you can’t move, then try to compensate for the heat. Move a sprinkler near the enclosure and add plants for more shade.
