Pellets can be a healthy addition to a sulcata tortoise’s diet. Healthy pellets, like Mazuri and Zoo Med Grassland are popular choices.
You can offer BOTH pellets to sulcata tortoises. There’s no rule that says you have to choose one or the other. Both pellets are healthy and have benefits to your tortoise when fed 1-3 times a week as a part of a varied diet of grasses, weeds and greens.
Mazuri Tortoise Diet
Mazuri tortoise diet comes in two versions – original and LS. Both versions are high-fiber and packed with vitamins and minerals.
When you look at the ingredients list, you’ll find a lot of soybean and oats. Mazuri pellets even include molasses (possibly for flavor?). The ingredients list of Mazuri is not impressive. It may even hold you back from offering it to your tortoise. But it is highly praised by many tortoise breeders and long-term hobbyists.
Mazuri is known to help sickly tortoises and tortoises overcoming illness gain weight. When moistened, the pellets have a smell that will help entice tortoises to take a bite and find they love it.
Zoo Med Grassland
Grassland pellets are packed with long-stem fibers from natural grasses like oat, timothy and alfalfa. It also contains dandelion greens, yucca and other plants. When you moisten Grassland pellets, the fibers and plants can be clearly seen.
Not a lot of tortoises immediately jump at eating Zoo Med Grassland pellets, but with persistence, you can get your sulcata to eat these tortoise pellets.
