Sulcata tortoises get large. Unless you’re The Hulk, you probably won’t be able to tote around, much less pick up an adult sulcata easily. At 100 pounds, you may need someone or something to help you move a large sulcata.
Generally, you wouldn’t need to move a large tortoise. But, if you have a baby sulcata, you need to plan on how you’re going to move it when it grows up. You may have a few years before you’ll need help, but it’s best to have a plan.
Reasons you may need to move a large tortoise:
- Move the tortoise to a different area of your yard
- Take the tortoise to the vet
- Moving to a new house
- Other
If you need to move a large, adult sulcata tortoise, you don’t want to break your back or cause any permanent damage to your back.
Use a Rubbermaid Cart, regular wheelbarrow, a Rubbermaid Trolley or a heavy-duty yard cart.
If you’re using a wheelbarrow or cart, tip it on its side so that you can gently slide the tortoise inside.
If you’re using a trolley that sits low to the ground, you can likely help the tortoise to take steps onto the trolley. Keep in mind that if you are using a trolley without sides, your tortoise may fall off. You could build low walls to help keep the tortoise on the bed of the trolley.
